Helen Stephens is a wonderful children’s illustrator and author I recently discovered. Her stories about Iris and the Lion are delightful. Her words and illustrations complement each other and, even though she presents us with a fantastical situation (a small girl trying to hide a Lion) the story really touches your heart.

The lesson that we learn from Iris is quite exceptional. Iris doesn’t let appearances impede her from helping out someone, in this case a Lion in need.

Through Iris’s kindness, the Lion learns that not all humans are out to get him. When a terrible situation occurs, the Lion goes out of his way to help the townspeople. The Lion isn’t resentful.

At the end of the story, the Lion and the townspeople reconcile and all is well. Iris and the Lion begin a beautiful friendship.

You can read the story here.
