Robert McCloskey was an American writer and illustrator of children’s books. Blueberries for Sal was his fourth published book and it received in 1949 a Caldecott Honor. I absolutely love this story. Here we read how Sal and her mother go out one day to pick blueberries to make jam. There in the field, they meet Little Bear and his mother.
Sal’s little adventure always leaves me with a smile and a yearning for a more peaceful and slow-paced life. On the final page of the book, we see Sal and her mother canning the jam. It reminds me of the moments all daughters and mothers share: getting dresses, baking cakes, planting flowers, sweeping floors, washing clothes, reading books… ordinary and inconsequential memories that fill our lives with love.
